Canada’s top surfers gathered on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island for the 2026 Rip Curl Nationals & GromSearch, held May 8–10 at Cox Bay in Tofino.

Set against the powerful backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, the three-day competition once again highlighted the rapid growth of surfing in Canada and the rising level of talent across all age divisions.

A Premier National Event

The annual Rip Curl Nationals and GromSearch serves as Canada’s national surfing championship, bringing together the country’s elite athletes along with the next generation of competitors.

The 2026 edition marked the 19th running of the event and featured surfers competing across multiple divisions including Open, Junior, and Grom categories.

While exact participation numbers vary year to year, the event typically attracts well over 100 surfers from across Canada, representing British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and beyond—making it the largest and most competitive surfing event in the country.

Cox Bay: Canada’s High-Performance Surf Break

The competition took place at Cox Bay, one of Canada’s premier surf locations known for its consistent beach break and high-performance waves.

With changing tides, shifting sandbars, and powerful swell, Cox Bay provides ideal conditions for progressive surfing—allowing competitors to showcase aerial maneuvers, powerful turns, and critical wave selection.

How Surfing is Judged

Surfing competitions like the Rip Curl Nationals are scored using a heat-based judging system, where surfers compete in small groups and attempt to post their best wave scores within a set time.

Judges evaluate each ride based on several key criteria:

  • Commitment and Degree of Difficulty
  • Innovative and Progressive Maneuvers
  • Combination of Major Maneuvers
  • Variety of Maneuvers
  • Speed, Power, and Flow

Each wave is scored on a 0–10 scale, and a surfer’s top two waves are combined for a total heat score (maximum 20 points).

Judges only reward maneuvers that are completed with control and forward momentum.

This system ensures that surfers must not only perform high-risk maneuvers but also execute them cleanly to receive top scores.

Pathway to International Competition

The Rip Curl Nationals is more than just a national title event—it plays a crucial role in athlete development.

Results from the competition help determine selections for Canada’s High Performance Program and international competitions, including the ISA World Surfing Games.

However, it’s important to note that this event does not directly award points toward the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour rankings.

Instead, it acts as a stepping stone, giving surfers exposure, experience, and opportunities to qualify for higher-level competitions.

At the professional level, surfers earn global rankings through the World Surf League, where points are accumulated across multiple international events throughout the season.

Strong performances in national events like Tofino can help athletes progress into those qualifying pathways.

The Future of Canadian Surfing

With strong participation numbers, improving athlete performance, and a world-class venue in Tofino, the future of Canadian surfing continues to rise.

The GromSearch division, in particular, highlights young surfers pushing the limits and developing skills that could soon translate to the international stage.

As waves rolled through Cox Bay and competitors pushed their limits in challenging conditions, one thing became clear: Canada’s surfing scene is no longer emerging—it’s arriving.
