Do Watch Parties Matter To Delta’s Youth

ALL PHOTO’S FULL Credit Wes Shaw/Shotbug Press

The City of Delta along with other cities, municipalities and/or towns in various areas of Canada have jumped on the bandwagon showing Canada’s support for the 2026 FIFA games.

While many are unable to attend any game played locally I am fortunate to Have Good Friend Wes Shaw with Shotbug Press send over some photos for us to use with various articles, which we appreciate.

It’s more or less like party central which is to offer up major growth not just in sport but will also hopefully put less stress in our health system for individuals of all ages.

One of the largest benefits is offering inspiration to hopefully thousands of young athletes who understand that soccer plays an important part of their community.

In part this can be noted or translated to having more children wanting to register, increasing an Increased volunteer coaching, support for local clubs, the use of more people using local parks and a stronger sense for community pride.

Knowing what we know now we understand that sport helps bring people together, while improving physical and mental health.

Given the overall cost to the families we now know that it indirectly helps control  equipment prices as well as registration prices for many local events.

BarrierHow local watch parties help
Expensive World Cup ticketsFamilies experience the excitement for free.
Travel to Vancouver or other citiesFamilies stay in Delta and avoid parking, fuel and transit costs.
Introducing children to soccerKids can try free activities before committing to a season.
Community awarenessParents learn about local clubs and programs close to home.

One of the major issues is the overall cost for equipment in addition to the families having issues with the cost of registration which continues to rise in part due to the fees charged by the cities and towns.

But realistically compared with the registration for  hockey, soccer remains one of the most affordable organized sports which off-sets the cost to Families with more than one playing the sport.

Some – but not all associations are changing their game schedule by setting up more of a local playing schedule which means playing within Delta means less driving for parents, more family time both ways, stronger local friendships and by far a greater community identity.

Only athletes who reach higher competitive levels generally need to travel throughout Metro Vancouver or British Columbia.

Long-term benefits for the City of Delta means a stronger sense of civic pride but more-so the primary goal to hosting the events is showing inspiration with community engagement.

Hosting the FIFA World Cup atmosphere in Delta allows families who can never attend a World Cup let alone attend a match in person the experience of their city close to home.

For the City of Delta, success is not measured only by how many people attended the watch parties.

In part, it will also be measured in the coming years by whether or not more children register with local soccer clubs playing through their teenage years while remaining active in sport throughout their lives.
