Origins Of The Delta Islanders Jr. A Program

Locally the Delta Islanders Jr. A team with a roster for the 2026 season with a couple of additional players dressed from the Jr. B 1 team which shows the overall development of the program.

I was asked prior to the start of the game about the overall program with questions wanting to know how they started, during their first season when they were awarded the first franchise among other questions.

In light of this I put together the following from my many dealings with the team and the franchise.

The Delta Islanders were officially awarded a BCJALL expansion franchise in 2001, with their inaugural season taking place in 2002.

The creation of the team came from a group of committed local volunteers who wanted to bring elite junior lacrosse to the community of Delta.

In that first season, the Islanders posted a respectable 12–12 record, finishing fourth and immediately proving they could compete at the highest junior level in the province.

From the outset, the vision for the Islanders was clear, noting that they were focused on developing elite-level players (ages 17–21) in addition to building a pipeline to higher levels including the National Lacrosse League and Western Lacrosse Association.

Over the years, the Islanders have evolved into one of the premier development programs in B.C managing to introduce a multi-tier system including Jr. A and Intermediate/Junior B development teams

In addition they have managed to attract talent from across British Columbia utilizing their ability to attract strong coaching and opportunity as well as producing top players going through the system such as Logan Schuss, Eli McLaughlin.

The breakthrough for the franchise and defining moment in franchise history came in 2016, when the Islanders captured their first BCJALL Championship and advanced to the Minto Cup, Canada’s national Junior A championship.

That victory established Delta as a legitimate contender and marked the program’s arrival on the national stage.

Like many junior programs, the Islanders have experienced cycles of rebuilding while looking in the most recent seasons the club has focused on, developing younger talent, strengthening defensive depth in addition to rebuilding toward consistent playoff contention.

Even in tougher seasons, the emphasis has remained on long-term player development and culture, ensuring the program continues to produce high-level athletes.

A major storyline heading into 2026 is the leadership of Logan Schuss, a former NLL standout and Delta Islanders alumnus who represents the full-circle success of the program.

While we understand and understand his background being a former Islanders player, NLL professional, Head Coach/GM as well as having a deep understanding of the Delta lacrosse system plus a strong focus on skill development and player advancement

Under his guidance, the Islanders are emphasizing structured development from minor lacrosse to junior, accountability and professionalism as well as preparing all players for the next level of the game and their career.

Heading into the 2026 BCJALL season, the Islanders are a blend of experience and youth with several returning Players who provide leadership and familiarity with the system and are key to stabilizing performance and culture and lastly expected to drive competitiveness from game-to-game.

The Islanders made nine selections in the 2026 Jr. A Entry Draft, focusing heavily on strengthening the defense and building depth which reflects a clear strategy to get bigger and tougher on the back end while building chemistry with regional talent pipelines (e.g., Chilliwack groupings) while ensuring long-term sustainability

One of the biggest strengths of the Islanders program is its integration with minor lacrosse acting as the top tier of the Delta lacrosse pathway, inspires younger players in the community providing local athletes a clear route to elite competition.

Schuss and the coaching staff are heavily involved in developing minor players, ensuring the future of the program remains strong.

The future for the Delta Islanders plus the goals are clear notably returning to BCJALL championship contention, develop more players for the NLL and WLA, continuing to grow lacrosse participation in Delta while strengthening their identity as a development-first organization

With a respected coach in Logan Schuss, a strong draft class, and a committed returning core, the 2026 season represents another important step in the evolution of the Delta Islanders Jr. A program.

The Delta Islanders remain a key part of the local lacrosse pathway, inspiring the next generation of players and continuing to grow the game right here at home and as the ball drops on the 2026 season, one thing is clear—this is a team on the rise.

They offer a mix of experience, youth, and leadership behind the bench with everyone coming together with one goal in mind – getting back to the top.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the action or better yet catch the action with all home games played at the Ladner Leisure Centre
