Junior lacrosse returned to the Leisure Center May 1st with the Delta Islanders Jr. B1 hosted the Maple Ridge Burrards following a dismal 16-6 loss against the Po. Coq Saints the previous night closing April returning to their home floor.

Lacrosse is a “staple” for the community in Delta given the success they have had over the past years namely Logan Schuss who runs the Junior program under the watchful eye of President and Junior Governor Matt Hoegg.

The home opener saw the Islanders start Joseph Foreman who faced 57 shots turning aside 47 while the Burrards utilized the talents of Blake Hastings who faced 62 stopping 50 in the loss.

While some were still coming through the turnstiles the Burrards got on the board early opening the scoring 27 seconds in managing to pepper shots from all areas of the floor taking a 2-0 lead at 16:07.

To the dismay of Islander supporters the pre-game cheering turned to silence but only until Logan Hinton hammered one past Hastings, opening the scoring for the Islanders.

The back and forth battle continued with each team getting quality chances that saw some exceptional close in chances from all areas of the floor.

The first twenty ended with the Islanders holding a 7-4 lead that saw each team test the other finishing the first with Delta taking seven minors while the Burrards were assessed six.

The second started with the Burrards again getting the jump, getting a pair of markers pulling within one until Islanders Levi Crooks put them up by a pair for a short-lived 8-6 lead.

The Burrards turned up their fire power hammering four past Foreman managing to take a 10-8 lead to the dressing room after forty minutes in a period that saw rough and aggressive play from both teams.

The third saw each team play more of a disciplined period in a contest where the coaching staff were more vocal with the players than in the first two periods.

The third was all Islanders that saw Levi Crooks get their first of the period at 12:52 pulling the Islanders within one followed by the tying marker making it even at ten from Logan Lawrence with all pressure on each tender.

An even minute later Islanders Ryan Roberts got the go-ahead marker followed by the game’s final goal from Logan Hinton giving the Islanders a 12-10 win in their home opener.

The home opener was not just a win for the Islanders but also a confidence builder for the Islanders next pair of home games are scheduled for May 8th (8 pm) against the Saints followed by a match-up against the Nanaimo Timbermen May 10th with a 5 pm start time.
