Covering professional women’s hockey has become a regular part of the Sportswave schedule, and Thursday night at Pacific Coliseum reinforced why the venue continues to be one of the PWHL’s most compelling stops.
One of the high spots on the night was to have Olympic Skating Champion Patrick Chan on hand for the opening face off who has had past interviews with Sportswave in the past so given the special night it was a welcome addition to the evening.
A trio of Vancouver Goldeneyes made Toronto’s first visit to the Coliseum a difficult one, powering the home side to a 5-0 win over the Sceptres in front of a packed crowd of 14,006.
Alternate captain Sarah Nurse led the way with two goals against her former club, Izzy Daniel added one of her own, and Kristen Campbell delivered a flawless performance in goal as Vancouver recorded the largest margin of victory in the PWHL this season.
The win snapped Vancouver’s three-game losing streak and marked the most goals scored in Goldeneyes history.
Toronto, meanwhile, finished its West Coast swing with back-to-back losses and suffered the largest defeat in franchise history.
Campbell turned aside all 24 shots she faced to earn her first shutout since the inaugural PWHL season.
The 2024 Goaltender of the Year was composed throughout, particularly during Toronto’s push in the opening period, which ended scoreless despite quality looks at both ends.
Vancouver broke the game open in the second period. Daniel opened the scoring at 5:58 with her third goal of the season, finishing off a strong shift that tilted the ice in the Goldeneyes’ favour.
Just over seven minutes later, the Coliseum erupted when Tereza Vanišová and Nurse scored unassisted goals 11 seconds apart, setting a new PWHL record for the fastest two goals by one team.
That stretch effectively decided the contest.
During the second-period surge, a walk through the concourse told its own story with a quick stop at Triple O’s turned into a full stop altogether, with no room even to stand as fans packed the area.
For a league still in its early seasons, the scene was a clear sign of momentum building around the Goldeneyes and women’s hockey in Vancouver.
Vancouver added to its lead early in the third period when Nurse scored her second of the night at 3:58, marking her first multi-point game of the season and extending her goal streak to three games.
Abby Boreen closed out the scoring at 9:35, ending an eight-game drought and ensuring all five goals came at the Coliseum, where she has been most productive.
Elaine Chuli took the loss for Toronto, allowing five goals on 28 shots. The Sceptres generated chances but struggled with puck management and could not solve Campbell, who was steady through traffic and sharp on lateral movement.
The Goldeneyes now turn their attention to Minnesota’s Grand Casino Arena, where several former Frost defenders will receive their 2024-25 Walter Cup championship rings.
For Sportswave, nights like Thursday continue to highlight the growth of the PWHL and the role Pacific Coliseum is playing in shaping its identity — one sold-out concourse and statement win at a time.
