BC Lions centre Angus Reid made it official and did the unexpected as he announced his retirement at the BC Lions training facility thus ending an impressive 13 seasons in the CFL with a storied career.
He wore the same number as the year I purchased my first car, so it was naturally a good fit for him and my Family as it kept on running, despite what you threw at it – repair after repair!!
Size has it’s merit and being a solid 6′ – 305 lbs he appeared in over 200 games through his solid playing career, in addition to playing in 11 playoff contests and three (3) Grey Cups.
“Few players have made the kind of impression both on and off the field as a member of the B.C. Lions that Angus has during his career,” Lions general manager Wally Buono said in a statement.
“He was an incredibly durable player, a tremendous leader in our dressing room and he will be missed by everyone in our organization.”
At the young age of 37 he is proud to call Richmond home and managed to win Grey Cup titles with the Lions in 2006 and 2011.
In the start of his career he was selected fourth (overall) in the 2001 CFL draft which was held by the Toronto Argonauts coming from Simon Fraser.
After being released during training camp, he was signed by the Montreal Alouettes before being dealt to the Lions later that season.
“I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play the game I love in front of the most important people in my life for more than a decade,” said Reid.
“I leave football with a lifetime worth of memories and as a far richer person because of the people who I have had the pleasure and honour to call teammates and coaches.
“My thanks as well to fans of the B.C. Lions, you are simply the best and it was a privilege to represent you on the field.”
